QUESTION

What can the state do for those who slander or defame your name

Asked on Mar 10th, 2016 on Civil Litigation - Mississippi
More details to this question:
Defamation and slander hurts people reputation and trust, what are the consequences for purposely harming and embarrassing someone. Beside a lawsuit, are there other options to enforce upon the person for defamation and slander? I am considering pursuing a lawsuit, but I would like to know what other options are out there for me.

Defamation (which can be either slander or libel, depending on whether it is oral or written) is a civil tort, not a crime.  To fight it, you can try to publicize the true facts and/or file a civil lawsuit.  The state would not be involved in either, other than to administer and adjudicate your lawsuit.
