What happens when judgment by default is taken against defendant for the relief demanded by plaintiff?

More details to this question:
Served with summons and complaint but did not file answer with clerk of court within 30 days, leading to judgment by default. Is it still possible to fight the claim?

It is still possible to fight, but you will have a better chance of succeeding in having the judgment vacated if (a) you move quickly; and (b) you have some sort of reasonable excuse for having failed to answer in a timely fashion.
