More details to this question:
As the economy is trying to recover so is my own financial status. Recently a creditor all of the sudden filed a lawsuit against me? This particular creditor never made an attempt to contact me before. Anyways creditor files suit and has now place a lien on my home. How does it affect me? Can they take over my mortgage? Or...? What exactly happens afterwards? Any info is welcome.

Since you did not respond to the lawsuit the creditor took a default judgment against you and then attached the judgment as a lien against your home. However, they cannot take over your mortgage payments.
My recommendation is to contact a lawyer to see if the judgment can be set aside. In California you can bring a motion to set aside a judgment under certain circumstances so long as it is within six months from date of entry of judgment.
