What is the difference of Felony and Misdemeanor?

More details to this question:
I am thinking about trying to get a license to sell health insurance and I was wondering if paraphernalia in any degree is a felony. Also, is theft of $7.00 worth of merchandise a felony because I was indicted to county court for the two crimes? The theft kept me from getting one job but I have passed background checks for others.
