What is the legality of a text message?

More details to this question:
It is my understanding that a text message is legally binding. I agreed to let my neighbor re-roof my house. He has not kept his end of the bargain. Can I hire someone else to do the job?

"Legality" is not the question. If your agreement was breached, no matter how you reached that agreement, you are not bound by the agreement.

The text message is written confirmation of the oral agreement. If your neighbor has not done the work, you should tell him that you've decided to use a different contractor for the job.
