Can a sheriff's sale be done on a property prior to a foreclosure judgement?

In California foreclosure is almost always non-judicial, so there is no judgment per se.

Generally foreclosure and then sale. You can stop the sale by stipulation or bankruptcy. I am not quite sure if Sheriff engages in the sale since sales are generally conducted by agencies professionally conducting Trustee sale. Sales can be done in the County recorders premises or courthouse steps.
