QUESTION

Where do I begin establishment of a new orthodox religion?

Asked on Apr 15th, 2013 on Litigation - South Carolina
More details to this question:
I am interested in legally establishing a Church. It would be an Orthodox Religion that IS for profit (in order to support self). It would be respectful of traditional religions already established, including Catholic, Mormon, Jewish, Methodist and other such related religions. I would like to call it "American Orthodox." I have not worked out the details, but it would not be a Church of Worship. It would be a Church of Respect. Where would I begin?

Do what Jim Jones did, as well as all of the gazillions of Evangalists have done. Incorporate. Make a name; register it with the State and the County. go on TV, radio, bill boards, and signs on the walls of lavatories all over the world. If you have a big ego, a big mouth, can think on your feet, and are not afraid to get up in front of a bunch of people and spout psycho-babble, then you could become quite successful. To me, there is a massive difference between religion and spirituality. The bulk of the religious zealots are not spiritual. They are merely salespeople and they are selling crap to a lot of people for a lot of money. I do not think that they do more than line their own pockets. The world urgently needs another religion. Hopefully, you won't be talking people into strapping on bomb belts and blowing themselves up in schools, houses of worship, restaurants, shops, and other "soft targets." We already have too many of those, also. And NO, we don't need sharia law here; this is the 21st centurty, and we are (supposedly) educated, intelligent, and have free will.

By hiring an attorney who could help you set up the business. Since it is for profit, you would not be entitled to receive tax deductible contributions, which means that a large majority of your parishioners would probably not make donations to you. From the little you have told me, I don't think your business plan is going to work.

You should probably establish a not for profit corporation in Nevada. A non-profit corporation can still raise money, hire employees, pay bills, etc. You should also apply with the IRS for exemption from taxes so that your contributors can get tax deductions for donations. I can help you find some good lawyers who specialize in this area of law.

You can begin by going to the State of California agency to get the necessary paper work to establish your organization as a charity (i.e. tax exempt) to meet state exempt status. You will have to start by going to the California's Franchise Tax Board and look under "religious organizations." Then you will have to file your articles of incorporation. You may also have to go to the IRS also to get federal exempt status as a non-profit organization.

Go to some other country. The first amendment prohibits the government from establishing a religion. Therefore our government does not legally recognize any particular religion and there is no procedure for legally establishing a religion. I am being facetious. Just decide, this is my religion, and if you are sincere, you have a religion (you do not sound sincere to me. You sound as if you want to pretend to start a religion to make money). It will help to find some others to adopt the religion you invent as their religion. How did this question wind up on a personal injury forum?
