My right hand was bitten badly by my own dog. I was transported to a local ER for treatment. The Dr. didn't clean my wounds and put in stitches, I had two breaks in my index finger besides numerous open wounds. I was put on IV antibiotics. When they were done I was released with many warnings about infection and told to see my own Dr. When I saw my Dr. I was referred to a ortho Dr. And scheduled for surgery. I was full of infection because my wounds were not cleaned and I had stitches closing the dirty bites! My thumb and index finger were opened up and pockets of infection were cleaned out. I may only recover 75 to 80% of use in my finger because of the infection in my knuckle. I was kept in the Hospitol for 2 1/2 days until the infection was gone from my bloodstream. I am still under going physical therapy to try to recover as much motion as I can in my finger. If I would have received proper treatment in the ER I would not have gotten the infection.
Medical malpractice cases are very difficult to pursue in Wisconsin. I write a blog about it at our firm's web site and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel did an excellent article last year on the difficulties of pursuing and winning a malpractice case; you would need to gather up all of your medical records; those records would then be reviewed by a malpractice lawyer; the lawyer would contract with an outside medical expert to determine if you have a viable case. The law for suing in Wiscinsin is three years from the date of the occurrence. If you fail to file a lawsuit within three years from the occurrence, your claim would be forever barred.
