Can attorneys send legal information through email?

More details to this question:
I received an email from a lawyer. Do I have to answer that email? Is it legal that lawyers can send out emails? I know what the email is about. But the problem I have with this is I thought lawyers have to send stuff like that with regular or certified mail.
