This recording will not be used for a court case or evidence. I just want to use it to come up with a personal decision for myself about the other person.

The law varies from state to state. I believe that it is okay for YOU to record what is said to YOU in a face to face conversation. However, if you do it on the phone, I believe that you have to let the person know that it is being recorded. Are you old enough to remember about the Nixon tapes? These were recordings made of conversations in the Oval Office.

In New York State, you are not permitted to record a third party without consent. However, if you are a part of the conversation, then you can record it. So, if you telephone a person and have a conversation with that person, you can record it because you are recording yourself having the conversation. You cannot record 2 other people having a conversation to which you are not a party.

It depends on the jurisdiction you reside in. In OK, it is permissible provided at least one party to the conversation is aware the recording is taking place.

Some states allow recording by one party to the conversation. I believe that Virginia allows recording but Maryland does not. Just ask Linda Tripp, the "snitch" in the Monica Lewinsky - Bill Clinton scandal.
