If you qualify for SSDI you should qualify for SSI.

Not that I know of. Too bad. The difference is about 20% more per month for life.

I assume by "SS" you mean "SSI" or "Supplemental Security Income" benefits. The only way you could switch from SSI to SSDI would be if you somehow able to get two (2) additional quarters to qualify you for SSDI. If you have been on SSI and have not worked at all, you would not have gained any quarters to get you up to 40. If, after you were awarded SSI, you started working again, which would have made you ineligible for SSI, then it is possible to get SSDI if you worked enough and your disability began again, which is what qualified you for SSI to begin with.

You can file a new application for SSI. However, if you have household income or assets, you might not meet the resource guidelines which basically require that you have minimal household income (including spouse's income) or assets.

This is really not within the purview of a personal injury. If you now have the 40 quarters, then re-apply. The SSA website is quite comprehensive and you might find the details you need on there.
