My non-roadworthy car was stolen, and whomever was driving it was involved in what I assume was a rear ending, since its front brakes are out, and the driver took off. I only found this is out when I called the impound lot because I thought it had been towed. I have left numerous message for the so-called investigating officer & no one will return my calls. They have had the car for 3 weeks. I know from having a vehicle stolen and recovered in the past that they make the owner pay the impound/tow fee regardless of how it got there. How long can they hold this and how can I get it released? As far as I know, no arrest was made.
There are no rules that I am aware of. The police or DA can always say the car is evidence. Why don't you get a lawyer who hangs out in traffic court or who knows the police or the people who operate the lot. Quit trying to do it the hard way.
Your car is evidence of a crime, and that is why it is being held. I think you need to talk to a local criminal attorney because there is a way through the court system to ask the court to release your car.
