QUESTION

How do I know if his messages are considered threats?

Asked on May 25th, 2015 on Personal Injury - California
More details to this question:
I have text message and recorded conversations with my boyfriend saying he "make it his life mission to destroy me", "when people disrespect him there are consequences", and that he "can't wait to destroy my life". Repeatedly I ask him to not threaten me and he says they aren't threats but promises. He also says that his family is very well connected, so most people know their place, and if they get out of line, like me, he will use his connections to destroy their lives.

First I think you should find a new boyfriend; then file a petition for a restraining order. Any kind of harassment, especially if it implies physical violence, will suffice to issue the restraining order. You also don't need a lawyer to get a restraining order. You can fill out the petition yourself, file it with court clerk, and court will issue it.

Why is he your "boyfriend"?!? The communications are abusive and deserve to be turned over to law enforcement for criminal prosecution and, if they continue, to be met by you with a DV restraining order. However, if you cease interaction with him his abuse might stop.
