QUESTION

How do I know if my attorney is overcharging me at my work comp?

Asked on Nov 27th, 2012 on Personal Injury - Florida
More details to this question:
had an accident while working as a CNA on the job in May 2008. In 2010 I hired an attorney, because I felt that the workman's comp was not working in my best interest. I decided to settle in July of this year and I understood from my attorney that it was a regulated amount to keep attorneys from over charging. Well, what I thought was $5400 all this time has now turned into almost $14,000 and they want my signature. Today is the first time I have seen this number and they wanted me to sign it and send it back immediately so they could send me my check. Needless to say I have signed nothing.

Update Your Profile
Go down and have a face-to-face meeting with your attorney and ask him (or her) to explain to you exactly how his (or her) fee went from $5400 to $14,000. Ask them if they have a problem with you consulting with another workers' comp attorney to discuss this fee arrangement with that attorney. Or, try calling the assistant for the worker's comp judge and ask if the judge could look at the matter.
