How long do I have to file a law suitagainst the people that killed my son?

More details to this question:
They killed my son July 24, 2009 and they are just now going to court-the 1st pleaded guilty 15 to life and the 2nd is going to court on Monday. We have been waiting for this to go through and it finally is happening.
