How long do I have to press assault charges?

More details to this question:
I was assaulted after a sports game and had to go to the hospital with a broken face. At the hospital, I filled out a police report with the officers they sent. When called the next day, I was on pain killers and was not sure if I should press charges at the time. If I wanted to press charges, what is the timing window I have to do this?

Do it as soon as possible, but you probably would have to do it within a year.
