How long does someone have to press charges?

More details to this question:
In North Carolina, I hit an arm at a gate for a business and broke it. They called the cops, but didn't press charges. Can they change their mind later?

I think maybe 2 years for a misdemeanor damage to property. Why don't you just do the right thing and pay for the damage you caused? I know that is an archaic concept in our culture today.
