Both you and your employer could be held liable if the accident occurred when you performing your job duties.  Has your employer been sued--if not, the injured party may not be aware that you were acting within the course of your employment.  If your employer has been sued, then you may want to speak with your employer's lawyer to see if he/she intends to also represent you.  Alternatively, you may want to check with the local bar association to see if there a program that provides free legal aid to civil defendants who do not have money to hire an attorney.  If none of this works, you may want to talk to a lawyer about bankruptcy.
