I've been advised to retain an attorney. my inquiry to one lawyer ended in a quote for fees in the amount of 1/3 of the settlement. That seems high. Is this standard? Should I negotiate?
That is usually a standard fee. But your contract should state that the attorneys fees will not exceed your net recovery (and adjustable). Meaning - whatever goes into your pocket the attorney fees will be less than that amount.
Attorney fees are not set by statue and you care free to negotiate the fee your attorney is charging you. However, most PI lawyers charge between .30 -.40% depending on when the case settles.
