If you are sexually assaulted, can you pursue a civil case against the man that did it without filing a criminal case?

I was raped by a man Aug 2016. When I went to file charges I was made to feel it was my fault...was told it was a he said she said case...and received no support from the police or distric attorney at all, so I stopped because I was sick and didnt have the strength to go up against the court alone. But now I feel he should have to be punished for what he did to me, and if the police wont help, thought a civil case would at least bring some judgement to the man and make him pay in some way even though I know he doesnt have much money...but thats not the point...I dont just want him to get away with what he did to me because I cant bring a criminal case against him.
