is it normal for a person to develop infectious diseases after surgery

More details to this question:
went thru two sets of epidurals in my back but still had to have surgery. three weeks after surgery signs of infection was noticed couple days later was undergoing another surgery and 4 days in hospital until the infections was identified. they were identified as ecoli and serratia. is there anything i can do?
