QUESTION

Rear ended someone causing 4 car accident

Asked on Apr 17th, 2013 on Automobile Accidents - Washington
More details to this question:
On the freeway in the carpool lane while theres traffic in the other lanes and out of nowhere theresa car in front of me stopped with no brake lights on. By the time I realized they were stopped it was too late and I skidded hitting one which caused a chain reaction to another two cars. The car in the very front was a woman who ended up leaving first and is not in the collision report. Second car was also fine and third car was totaled (just the bumper fell off). Anyway, fast forward about two months with my ticket off my record and me thinking everything is over with I get a letter saying that the lady who was in the very front has hired a lawyer. Should I be concerned? Im not entirely sure what she is looking to do but I also don't know where to go from here any advice is much appreciated.

Under Washington law you are required to maintain a safe distance behind the car in front of you. That generally means you should be able to stop without hitting that car even if that car makes a sudden stop. Even if you get a ticket off your driving record you may still be found civilly liable for the accident. If you received a letter from an attorney representing a party to the accident you should be concerned. If you have insurance, should immediately contact your insurance company. Under your policy, they have a duty to defend you against any civil action that may be taken against you.
