QUESTION

What can I do if everyone know how much I make?

Asked on Feb 23rd, 2014 on Personal Injury - North Carolina
More details to this question:
My husband works for my sister and her husband. They own a business. My husband is an independent contractor for them. My sister keeps telling everyone in my family what my husbandโ€™s pay checks are, how much he makes, what he has made for the year and how many hours. I didn't think that was legal. I thought that was confidential information. But my mother says it's not. My dad says they are allowed to tell everyone because we are family. Is this illegal?

There is nothing illegal about it, it is just in bad taste. Since she is your sister, why not have a private conversation with her and say in a non-confrontational manner "Sis, it makes me and Charlie uncomfortable when you discuss his finances with others, even though they are family members. Would you mind keeping it private?" This is one of the hazards of doing business with family.

Family members running their mouths about each other is neither legal nor illegal. It is the way folks are. If you don't like it, let your husband find other work. By the way he cant be an employee and an independent contractor at the same time. He is either one or the other, not both.
