What typically happens after a settlement has been reached?

I was in a car accident, the other party was at fault their car insurance for the medical side. Wants to pay me a settlement check, I am getting conflicting information. I had people tell me that sense it is not my insurance company they will not pay the medical bills , they only will give me a settlement check an it is my responabilty to pay it. The other information i am getting is that once a settlement is reached all unpaid medical bills will be taken out automatically an the remaining amount will be mailed to me.
