QUESTION

19 year old refuses to clean up

More details to this question:
Hi. I live in New Jersey & my husband's 19 year old grand daughter lives with us. My issue with the gd is that she never cleans up after herself. Her room looks like a hoarder's room. There's dirty dishes on her dresser that would sit there for weeks, months until it grows mold. Her room hasn't been cleaned for more than a year. We tell her to clean, but she would just move things around and it would still look the same. She quit college and just recently started a job bar tending and now she uses her job as an excuse not being able to clean up. I have two other daughters, 12 and 4 living in the house and I believe this is a health hazard not only to my husband's gd, but to everyone living in the house. What can I do to get her to clean up or get her to move out or live with her dad since she is now an adult? Please help. I've been in this situation for so long and my husband refuses to do anything about it other than "tell" her to clean and it goes on deaf ears.

I'm sorry to read that you are having this trouble.  At age 19 she is legally an adult.  If she does not pay rent to you, or contribute in anyway, then she is a "guest" and the house is yours.  You have a right to go into the room and remove all of the trash and clean up the situation and then ask her to leave.  It may have to get to the piont of "tough love" to indicate she can only stay if she cleans the room up toyour satisfaction and keeps itclean.  Otherwise, pack up her stuff while she is not home and tell her she has to move out.  Good luck !
