can i be evicted without formal paperwork

More details to this question:
I was short $500 for July rent. Without giving me notice to rectify my rent, landlord started eviction proceedings with the court. I was verbally told by landlord that I had to be out by Aug 1.

It depends on what you call notice? Were you served a Notice to Quit? That is the begining of the formal process.
