QUESTION

Can I change the locks on my door?

Asked on Jul 31st, 2024 on Residential Real Estate - Michigan
More details to this question:
I have a roommate that things are not going well with. I just recently on Monday gave her a note about rent being due on 8/1. She has been late to pay rent for the last two months. She is also diliberetly leaving lights on, the air conditioning way down where it usually isn’t when she is not here. Also, leaving messes with dishes. She also has a very explosive temper and I have witnessed this with her children. So I am afraid for myself and my child and what she will do if she comes home and I am here with my kid.

Is there a written lease? If so, it's terms control the situation. You can use the words of the lease to send a notice of default (listing her acts of actual default on the lease also give her a notice to quit. From there, you can evict. USE the latest forms from courts.michigan.gov
