Should we not be paying the same as the new tenants at $895?

Asked on Aug 22nd, 2017 on Landlord and Tenant Law - California
More details to this question:
The apartment complex was sold in May 2017. We were on the contracts. Mine was an 11 month lease till this coming December 2017. Due to new management/owners, the going rent is $895.00 now for a 1 bedroom as I have. Due to no contract with new owners, it is month to month.

No, unless there is a local rent control ordinance, every tenant and landlord are free to negotiate what the amount of rent will be.? Even if there is rent control, that only determines the maximum rent, not that all similar units pay the same amount.

They have to honor your old rent until the original term ends.
