What can I do regarding a lost rental payment?

More details to this question:
I have been at my apartment since May 2012. On June 4, I placed my rent in an envelope (cash) labeled with my name address and month of payment in the rental drop slot at the leasing office. I was with a witness. On June 10th, I was contacted by my manager's assistant stating I had not paid my rent. I informed her that I had and told her I could show her my bank statement for the withdrawal I made and a written statement from the person that gave me the rest. I contacted the manager and told him the same thing and he said he didn't have it and I was getting on his nerves. I went to speak wit him when he informed me that he and his assistant were not the only people with access to where the rent deposits are made. Vendors and maintenance workers also have access. I was served with a 3-day notice as a result. Is there anything I can do to avoid this? My lease expired on may 31, 2013.

You have made a very bad mistake to pay in cash without a receipt as you actually have very poor proof of payment. It is their word against yours, and without additional proof, in my preliminary opinion, you will lose.

Send a letter to the landlord telling the facts. If he sues you, put on your defense with copies of your bank statement and an affidavit from your friend. Since you placed the money where the landlord had designated payments to be made, it is the landlord's fault if the money was stolen.
