More details to this question:
I have been researching my ancestry and found an article in an old paper in Indiana, PA, there were several of th family named as defendants on the charges of sitting in equity. Plantiff was Mabe C. Holmes, Master. It looked in the atricle that there was coal on the many many acres in the two tracts of land that were for sale. Also mentioned somewhere in the article was a defunct coal company.

It simply means that a court is invoking its power to award remedies other than damages.  For example, a court may determine who the rightful owner to property is, or whether someone has an easement impacting another party's property.
