If you have paid into Social Security over the years, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Income. This is not affected by income from any other source. If not, you may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income. This is affected by earned and unearned income. You can apply online at www.ssa.gov. The key is to be prompt, patient, polite and persistent. If you must appeal to an administration law judge (after losing a request for reconsideration and a request for redetermination), you will need a lawyer. If you lose, the lawyer gets nothing. If you win, the lawyer gets paid out of your back benefits. You can find one on the website of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatatives.
