QUESTION

Am I going to get in trouble with social security.

More details to this question:
I live in Florida and have been getting SSI since 2010. SSI has rules that say you can't have more than $2000 worth of anything in the house at any one time. I have found it hard to follow the rules. My medication causes cognitive impairment. If they were to look at my credit history or bank statements they would probably find them to be suspicious. There was a time when I financed a 1300 couch. And another timed when I bought a 1300 tv, 1000 iMac. Its been going on since the beginning. From what I understand, if they get on to you, they notify you of a backpay. If the backpay is more than 100,000 you can go to prison. I am getting off ssi now. I am getting job pretty soon. But I really wish I would not have done this. Am I going to have to worry about this for the rest of my life? What should I do? Have I done anything wrong? Am I in the clear once I am off it?

The $2,000 limit applies to financial asssets, not personal possessions. If you were overpaid, you can negotiate a monthly payback agreement which will not bankrupt you. If you would like an attorney to help you, you can find one on the websited of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives.

This is general information. It cannot substitute for a personal consultation with an attorney. It is not intended to be legal advice or imply an attorney-client relationship.
