QUESTION

Can I apply and receive Disability and Social Security at the same time?

Asked on Aug 26th, 2019 on Social Security Disability - Ohio
More details to this question:
I will be 62 in a few weeks and have not worked since Sep 2017 due to health issues and physical restrictions. I have been on several medications for many years. I was demoted then resign after 20 years with a company, then worked for 4 months and was fired, then worked for a company for 7 months and quit before he fire me. I have not been able to find a job that I could physically do anymore. Should I apply for Disability or Social Security or both?

Social Security Disability Insurance is the monetary equivalent of Social Security Retirement Benefits, to which it converts when you reach full retirement age.  You cannot receive both.  If you are eligible for SSDI, apply for that.  Taking your retirement benefits at 62 will lower the monthly benefit by 30% for the rest of your life.

This is general information. It cannot substitute for a personal consultation with an attorney. It is not intended to be legal advice or imply an attorney-client relationship.
