You can apply for Social Security Disability Insurance at www.ssa.gov.  It is based on how much you have paid into Social Security through payroll deductions.  You must apply within five years of leaving your last job.  If it has been more than five years since you last worked or the amount of your benefit is less than the Supplemental Security Income monthly benefit ($783 in 2020), you will receive that amount plus whatever, if anything, your state adds to supplement it. Please note that you must present medical evidence of your disability and that it makes you unable to work and is expected to make you unable to work for at least one year.  You may present evidence from your own physician and therapist, from your local MHMR, and ask Social Security to send you to its own physician to evaluate.  You may want to attach any media or police reports or court documents showing the cause of the disability.
