Your employment contract governs what disability or retirement for disability is available through your job. You can also apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) based on your work record at www.ssa.gov. A decision is based on whether you can do a job, not just your current job, or can be expected to be able to do so within the next 12 months. You can handle the application, request for reconsideration and request for redetermination yourself. If you are denied at all three of these levels and appeal to an administrative law judge, you will want a lawyer. The lawyer will be paid out of the Social Security award, if any. To find one, please see the website of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives.
