More details to this question:
I filed in Memphis, Tennessee at the Austin Peay branch of Social Security in January 2013. I was told I would hear something in 3 months. In May 5 months later I called to see where my case was. I was told i did not supply all the information, which I did. I went back to the SS office and they found the papers that were missing on a desk in their office. We went through the process to make sure all the paper work was done. I was told it would be 3 months again before I heard. I received notice they had received everything but the medical records for Methodist Hospital and Memphis Orthopedic Group. I signed a release in January and also in May for those records, I visited each of these organizations to find out why they had not sent them each stated they would send within the week. That was the middle of August. I have not heard anything from SS Administration. I also know presently the government is shut down which has stopped processing. I know you cannot do anything until denied.

If your situation is "dire," you have the option to request to expedite your case for dire need.  You would need to document your situation, however. If you are denied, you may want to consult a local disability attorney because a local attorney can review your case and assist in any appeals and/or hearings.  SSI and SSD cases before an ALJ or appeals can be nuanced and an experienced attorney may be able to increase your likelihood of success.  Most disability attorneys offer a free initial consultations.
