I have been told that I am prohibited from buying items such as herbal health products and small electronic parts for projects with money from my ssdi check.

Supplenental Security Income (SSI) must be spent only on food, shelter and medical care.
Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) is not subject to these restrictions.
