QUESTION

Can we file our taxes as single?

Asked on Jun 19th, 2014 on Taxation - Washington
More details to this question:
We were married in Mexico legally. We are US citizens, but when we returned, we never applied for a marriage certificate. I also have not legally changed my name. I am curious, can we file taxes separately still, or do we need to file them as married?

You are legally married. The U.S. recognized valid marriages of the other countries. So your only options are to file "married filing jointly" or "married filing separately." But you should not file as "single."
