QUESTION

How should I be paying my back taxes?

Asked on Apr 14th, 2015 on Taxation - Ohio
More details to this question:
I received notification from the IRS for an intent to Levy on 7/26/2014. I currently owe $9,400 in back taxes. I set up a payment plan last year but was unable to pay 2009 taxes by 6/2014. Therefore, they terminated my installment agreement. I cannot afford to be garnished or have my account levied. Please help.

They may still be willing to make a new installment agreement. Can you pay at least $360 per month? Probably you are best off if represented by a lawyer.

You will need to call the IRS and explain why you were unable to pay the 2009 taxes by the deadline. Then pay 2009 and you can reestablish your installment agreement.

If they sent you an intent to levy last July, they've probably already filed the levy. If you owe taxes from 2009 and can't afford to pay them, you should look into an offer-in-compromise or bankruptcy.
