Is there a statute of limitations for asking for payment?

More details to this question:
I have a business and just received a letter they found a tax bill they are saying I didn't pay 26 years ago for $1043 and now with penalties its $5967.72. Is there a statue of limitations for asking for payment.

Yes there is, several, actually. Which statute of limitation's law applies to your situation will likely require you to see a tax attorney. For example, does this relate to a tax shelter? Is this a state or federal tax liability. There are too little facts to be able to answer your question. Find a tax attorney to discuss this with.

If a return was filed, there was no fraud, and no extension of the statute of limitations, the federal statute of limitations is three or six years (depending whether there was a substantial omission or negligence).
