QUESTION

What can I do about my tax debt?

Asked on May 29th, 2012 on Taxation - Michigan
More details to this question:
I am a California teacher, and I have not filed my 2009 taxes. Originally I did not file them because I was in graduate school for two years during this time, and everything was financially difficult, as I was paying out of pocket. I have been making payments of $100, which I thought was going towards the total estimated taxes of $800. Today when I called the tax board, I found out that I owe $1,802.35. Is there anything that can be done to alleviate this situation?

I would certainly seek counsel from a tax attorney immediately. Sometimes it is possible to have the penalties waived in order to keep the tax bill from becoming absolutely impossible. Generally, however, interest will not be waived and of course you will have to pay the taxes which were due. You need to reach some form of agreement and understand what that is with a taxing authority.
