Am I required to go through probate

More details to this question:
My brother passed on 10/1/21 at 69 (no will) - He has a used car but no assets -he lived off Medicare and received food stamps - rented an apartment with 2 other people - I am his only surviving relative (sister) - he had insurance which paid partially for his funeral exp. - my husband and I paid the remainder - he has a bank account that has 800 in it of which we haven’t touched - how do I proceed - do I have to go through Probate? - can I close his bank acct.?
