More details to this question:
My partner has recently passed with no will in place. He has been estranged from his parents for several years now, however, they are trying to file an affidavit for possession of his assets. Is there anything that I or his closest friend (the only listed emergency contact upon his death) can do to stop this process? BTW I am in the state of Texas.

If you are not married, you get nothing. You may think that you are "common law" married but that is very difficult to prove.

This is general information. It cannot substitute for a personal consultation with an attorney. It is not intended to be legal advice or imply an attorney-client relationship.
