QUESTION

Estate account??

Asked on Oct 27th, 2019 on Estate Planning - Washington
More details to this question:
My mother passed away and I am her only child. I just got a check for the estate of...but I never had to open an Estate account since there never was a question of who got what. How would I cash it or can I? The check isn't for that much, less than $300. I am not sure what to do with it and I cannot get it changed into my name...I have already talked to the company.

If your mother had any more than that and the clothes on her back, you probably will haveto probate her estate and open an estate account.  If she had no more than that and the clothes on her back, you can let the check go to unclaimed property and, in a few years, prove to the state comptroller that you are her heir and her only heir.
