How do I file to be named executor of an estate?

More details to this question:
My great grandparents estate has not been settled over 20 yrs after they died. The current attorney handling our families affairs says we need to have an executor. How do I do that, if there was no will and thee closest family members have all died?

It is my understanding that in Texas, a Will must submitted to probate within four years of the death.  Since you have an attorney advising you, I would ask for more specifics about what they want you to do.
