QUESTION

Identity Theft of Deceased Elderly

Asked on Feb 28th, 2013 on Estate Planning - New Jersey
More details to this question:
My 95 year old father recently passed away. My brother does not want to shred documents with his social security number or other ID info. If someone gets this info, can they get a credit card or loan in his name? Not sure what category this goes under.... Thanks.

Identity theft happens this way all of the time !  There are companies that will come to your house or business and shred huge amounts of stuff for a very reasonable price. For example - there is a company called Shred It that will leave you a bin, you put everything in, they come back and shred it for you.  I would recommend shredding everything because a lot of identity theft happens the old fashioned way - by people getting credit card statements or social security numbers through the trash.  Also - many local banks offer days in which you can bring paper to be shredded.  good luck !
