QUESTION

My Fathers Will

Asked on Dec 30th, 2020 on Estate Planning - Virginia
More details to this question:
My father passed away a year ago in Kinston, NC. He was in his 90's and lived a good life. He has a living spouse who has dementia. The executor of his will is the cousin of the living spouse. I have never seen the will. Yesterday I received a certified check in the mail from the executor. It was from her personal bank. There was a personal letter that stated "Your Dad wanted you to have money after Ellen (his wife) passes. I am able to give this to you now. Enclosed is a cashiers check." She also stated that she "made the check out according to the will". I know I am named there. I called the County courthouse to get a copy of the will and they said not will had been filed there. His wife is moving into Hospice soon and I am feeling like this is all a bit suspicious. Can you help?
