QUESTION

What is about the unfair housing practices?

Asked on Nov 27th, 2012 on Estate Planning - Michigan
More details to this question:
My apartment complex recently came under new ownership. During the switch, they became aware of some "mishandling"of funds. I don't have my receipt for one month of rent and they are now trying to charge me for that month. I saw that I should have had a credit and they agreed but only took it away from the month that they claim is "missing". They refuse to give me a rental verification until I pay.. I have my money for the last months rent in an escrow account. Advice?

If you pay in cash and get a receipt, then that puts you in a difficult position. You always want to have a paper trail to back you up. Always. That prevents situations like this from happening. You can get the former owners to intervene on your behalf, perhaps, but otherwise, I think you are in a tough spot. If I am a judge looking at your case, it would be a toss up.
