QUESTION

Beneficiary question

Asked on Jun 23rd, 2020 on Wills and Probate - Ohio
More details to this question:
How do you go about finding out if you were a beneficiary on a policy or will? It uncle passed away three months ago, and I have not reached out to his executor, who is his cousin, about the situation. My mother said to me on a call when he passed away, that he left both of us something but she was just going to keep it all to use for her funeral expenses someday. She is also in an assisted living and has been for over five years, so, not sure she can even have this sort of thing on hand. They live in Ohio and I am in San Diego. Am I at liberty to reach out to his cousin and pose this question? I have waited three months. Thank you, Kristin

When a Will is submitted to probate, it becomes a public document.  Contact the probate clerk in the county in which your uncle died.  Note that some counties have probate records online. If you know the life insurance company which issued the policy, your mother can present your uncle's death certificate.  If she is a beneficiary, the company will respond.
