QUESTION

Did my lawyer act in my best interest?

Asked on Dec 10th, 2013 on Wills and Probate - New York
More details to this question:
Originally hired my lawyer based on a referral from a familiar lawyer for a wrongful death case on behalf of my brothers, my father's wife and I. Law firm was a personal injury expertise group. Received a minor settlement on that. The on going issue I have is that this happened in 2006, and at the time of my fathers passing, he was receiving lottery annuities which were suppose to continue until 2021 based on a 20 year payout of $104,000/yr. The case is still unsettled for distribution for heirs as there was no will involved and their was a back tax issue. After 7 years and going, I haven't received any correspondence in the last year and learned that my attorney has left the law firm and I was never notified of that either. I also learned that my attorney has repeatedly needed to be corrected on various aspects of the case since it's outside her specialty. Should she have informed me that this was not her expertise, and suggested I get someone else? Was I being taken advantage?
